Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) is the single biggest constraint — aphid-spread, it wiped out Cavite's papaya industry in 1982 and cut Southern Tagalog output by up to 80%, and bacterial crown rot and mites add to it. PRSV-tolerant hybrids (Sinta, Red Lady, Known-You No.1) help. The recurring importer complaint, though, is quality consistency: non-uniform ripening, irregular color and maturity, and uneven sizing.

Ringspot virus and short shelf life dominate. Notably, the treatment burden to the Gulf is low — the Middle East waives the VHT that Korea and Japan require.
