Pineapple

Pineapple is the easiest of the seven to ship and one of the hardest to enter — a 30-day shelf life and year-round supply, all of it running through a two-company plantation duopoly.

02 / SEASONALITY & SOURCING WINDOW

When it harvests, where it grows, when to buy

Harvest seasonality — relative intensity by month

PSA / industry

Harvest runs year-round thanks to ethylene-induced flowering, with a smallholder peak April–July and a 12–14 month growth cycle. The duopoly uses induction to keep supply flat and contracts predictable all year.

Year-round availability — but the giants already smooth it, so there's no seasonal gap for you to arbitrage.

03 / SOURCING & DISEASE RISK

What can go wrong at source

Sourcing risk profile (higher = more challenging)

Desk synthesis

Pineapple carries relatively low pest and disease pressure — the acidic flesh and hard rind protect it, and it isn't a fruit-fly host of concern. The main handling tasks are rapid pre-cooling and basic scale/mealybug sanitation, not disease management.

Almost every operational risk is low — the binding constraint is competition. Dolefil and Del Monte own the lane.

04 / LOGISTICS & SHELF LIFE

Getting it to the Gulf intact

MD2 travels superbly: pre-cool to 10°C within 4–6 hours of harvest, wash and sanitize, wax for moisture retention and shelf appeal, sort by weight for carton uniformity, and pack in 5–7 layer water-resistant cartons. The result is a 30–35 day shelf life — the best long-haul logistics of any fruit here.

05 / THE GULF BUYER & DEMAND

Who buys it, and how

Pineapple ships worldwide and the Gulf is a buyer, but 2025 growth was led by China and Japan, not the Middle East. Dolefil and Del Monte run fully integrated chains controlling supply and contracts, and only about 17% of the industry is fresh-for-export (over 70% is processed canned/juice, also giant-controlled).

Where to learn what healthy demand looks like — not where to start. Only realistic angles: processed/value-added or tiny specialty volumes the giants ignore.

Entry playbook

Commercially closed. The only realistic angles are processed or value-added formats, or very small specialty volumes the giants ignore. Otherwise, like banana, it's a benchmark — proof the demand exists — not your way in.
